We deserve that full dollar, too!
By Lucky Mama, Thursday, March 26, 2009“The dollar is not going to wait for women’s 78 cents to catch up.”
Amen! That’s what Tricia Earl told me yesterday as she explained why Gloria Steinem’s activism is still relevant.
Yes, there have been lots and lots of advances as women and men work together toward creating equality in the workplace. Those advances are because of Gloria and others like her who stepped out of their comfort level and stood up for what’s right.
I’m able to enjoy my job as a journalist today because of the way Gloria Steinem blazed a path into journalism for women. But her work is not done.
Tricia, the coordinator for Texas Tech’s Women’s Studies Program, pointed out to me that although women hold all kinds of impressive titles these days, the money is still what talks.
“It’s the same old conversation,” Tricia said. And Gloria is still bringing it to the forefront.
That’s why I am excited she’ll be here for the 25th annual All-University Conference on the Advancement of Women in Higher Education, which opens April 2 and concludes April 3 with Steinem’s speech. You can see her, too. She’ll begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Civic Center. Tickets are $10 at Select-a-Seat, 800-735-1288.
