Remember Shelby Knox? She led Lubbock’s Youth Commission as it pushed for comprehensive sex education in the Lubbock Independent School District a few years ago. In 2005, the documentary “The Education of Shelby Knox” won a Sundance Film Festival Award.

Four years later, her activism continues. She’s graduated from college and travels the country speaking about sex education, gay rights and feminism. She’s based in New York … and guess which other New Yorker she looks up to, which icon of feminism she’ll join in Lubbock this week … You got it: Gloria Steinem!

Shelby will deliver the Friday morning address for Texas Tech’s All-University Conference on the Advancement of Women in Higher Education. It’s free – just be sure to register by 8:30 that morning or in advance. Shelby’s speech will be in the StudentUnionBuilding, as will all activities except Gloria Steinem’s 4:30 speech at the Civic Center.

Check out the Q&A with Shelby, plus Merissa Ferguson’s fun photos of her.

Here’s a short clip of Shelby as she testifies before Congress:

Let’s go support her Friday as she comes home to share her experiences, insight and encouragement as we women continue to strive for a fairer world.

What an exciting event! Thanks for sharing this. You'll have to take good notes for all of us that can't be there!

Right here in Lubbock... there are those few who speak out. Many others are too afraid. This will be a powerful event! I love what Gloria said in an interview, "Women get more radical with age, men get more conservative. There's going to be a lot fireworks and excitement!" Straight talk and more fun! Bring it!

Charles Savoie---how about asking men to stop running for office for a few years, do some housework instead, let women run government, and prove if you can do better (actually I, a man, think you can do better and would love to see it happen.)  It's because we've learned too much aggression as one one example---"movies can't be exciting without violence."
