Have you ever heard the story of the person who got the game winning monopoly piece off his McDonald’s cup and anonymously mailed it to a Children’s Hospital?  Forgoing millions, he/she gave without asking for any type of credit or appreciation.  The act of giving itself was enough for him/her.

I think I'm in love with you. Always on time, you arrive with the added pleasure of late sleeping and spare time to linger in pajamas over a cup of piping hot coffee. I particularly enjoy welcoming your weekly arrival by creating a hearty homemade breakfast while I tune into the Phantom Gourmet and TV Diner. Without the added "tomorrow is Monday" stress that your pal Sunday morning brings, Saturday morning, I just wanted to thank you for being you.

Love always,
Your biggest fan

My children have dentist appointments on Monday. I know this. I am planning on it. I did not need a reminder phone call. And, I’m not really sure I got one.

THE KKK and the GOP

In August 2008, Derek Black, the then 19 year old son of former KKK grand wizard, Don Black, won a little noticed election for a Republican Executive Committee seat in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Today is an epic day in history.

Today I entrusted the care of my child, Hannah, to my boyfriend, Heath, for 8 WHOLE hours. (pause for a quick prayer).

On Monday, I tell my 15-year-old son, “Your hair’s getting a little long,” thinking he’ll take the hint.

"It's fine" is his reply, punctuated with a little head shake to momentarily move his bangs out of his eyes.

Laurie: It occurred to me that I have an ever-growing list of things I will never do. First and foremost is anything I am told to do. I’m not saying I can’t or won’t follow instructions, but telling me I have to do something is the kiss of death. Even if it makes perfect sense, I’m still not going to do it. There are so many clever ways you can make a suggestion or even manipulate me to make me think it is my idea. And then I may do what you want me to.

Imagine that you're married. Your husband spends 2 hours every morning in the bathroom, making sure his hair is perfect. When he comes home from work, he is the first to suggest watching Style Network. He loves to gossip about your friends with you ("OMG, she said what?). When a mouse runs across the floor, he's the first to jump on the couch, squealing at the top of his lungs.

Not very appealing, huh?

I don’t like beer, much less green beer, so this drink caught my eye for St. Patty’s Day.

It’s called Liquid Luck, and here’s how to make it:

1 part tequila
1 part white cranberry juice
2 splashes Midori
1 splash Triple Sec

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! And thanks to Rosangel tequila for sending us the recipe.

Laurie: Oprah, my March issue of O Magazine arrived today. You looked lovely on the cover of course, but imagine my surprise when I turned the issue over and there on the back cover was Ellen DeGeneres! Now granted, this was an advertisement for both Olay and Cover Girl (you would think that between her show and American Idol she wouldn’t have time for extra activities), but I am sure you can see the inequity of the situation. Ellen has graced your co

I’m not a dog person. Never have been. My homely mutt Fred ran away from home when I was a kid, and it apparently caused me little grief, given that I barely remember the incident.

Now Leroy, our long-time family dog, was pretty cool terrier-type mutt—barking away the vicious birds in our trees when we came home, retrieving and burying the rocks we’d throw, transforming into a ferocious protector between a group of us playing and a large rattlesnake in the nearby cedar bush.

We’re in Wal-Mart, and I’m looking at beads as if I might actually try making jewelry someday in all the spare time I have for myself as a working mom with a traveling husband. Then I hear the loud, gleeful voice of my 2-year-old:

“I tee-teed!”

He’s standing in a puddle. A large puddle. And, of course, I didn’t bring any spare clothes because he’s been potty trained for months – and we went to the bathroom as soon as we walked in the door. What I didn’t count on was he’d be scared to use the automatic-flush toilets.

For some reason I don't remember the 2000 Census, as strange as that sounds. I'm sure we had one but 2000 was a pretty sad year for me so there's a chance I just don't remember.

There has been a lot of hype about the new Liberty line at Target. I went to look at what it was all about. I have mixed emotions of what I saw.  With the amount of advertising I have seen I expected much more. I did love the patterns they picked for their bedding line and I did buy a beautiful floral print dress. They did have some adorable dresses for little girls.  On the other hand what I did see brought back memories of the time my husband and I spent in London. I spent many a day at the Liberty store in their fabric section.

If a fat roll develops under the hooded sweatshirt, and no one sees it, is it really there? The answer, in short, is yes.

Laurie: Never say never. I sat on a wooden porch somewhere in Baroda, India, and watched a peacock stroll by with full plumage unfurled. A couple of “saints-in-training” clad in orange togas were sitting in the trees to provide spiritual support. We were on a guru’s ayurvedic farm during monsoon season, and I had plenty of time to contemplate what the heck I was doing there.

I’m finding Facebook status messages awfully inspiring lately. Here are a few of my favorites from this past week.

This one was a post I shared from my friend Christi Beth Martinez who reposted it  from her friend Ann …

“Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right. Forget the ones who don't. Believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it. No one said life would be easy … they just promised it would be worth it.”

Thank you Bob Phillips, for helping me to understand you can take a girl out of the small town, but you can’t take the small town out of this girl.

There’s a certain audience that Bob Phillips reaches with Texas County Reporter, but they don’t necessarily live in small town U.S.A. Bob (he’s just the sort of guy that makes you think you can call him that even though you’ve never met him) spoke recently to the Lubbock Advertising Federation.

elizabeth: Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana did something a few weeks ago that no other member of Congress has done in the open. He gave Congress the middle finger and is walking away – no re-election campaign for him. Bayh is feeling like millions of Americans are feeling – fed up, pissed off and maybe it’s time we don’t take it anymore. We blogged recently about meteorologists messing up weather predictions but I got boots, scarves, umbrellas, ice scrapers, and sun tan lotion so if they mess up, I can still take care of myself and my family.

I have woken up this morning to some rather disturbing news, one that is saddening to not only the family, but also to my generation that grew up in the 80s. Corey Haim was found dead of what appears to be an accidental drug overdose at 3:30 am this morning.

I have to admit I love it when my kids sneak into my bed at night.

When I hear the shuffle of those little feet, I’m instantly awake and happy. I throw back the covers and pull whichever boy it is into my arms.

Now that the morning buzz of last night’s Academy Awards is starting to die down and everyone is over the horror that was the bottom half of Zoe Saldana’s dress, I thought I’d pipe in with my snarky comments.

Okay, wait, just one more comment on that dress…I mean, WOW! The top half was gorgeous, such beautiful bling and the lavender was so lovely.  All there is to say about the bottom half is that it looked like something  from flamenco dancer hell might wear.

I finished "Her Fearful Symmetry" this morning while on the bike at the gym.

I'm not usually one of those people that reads while working out, but in the name of time-saving and this challenge, I decided to break my own rule.

First of all, I must start by saying that this book was NOTHING like Audrey Niffeneger's (author of Her Fearful Symmetry) masterpiece "The Time Traveler's Wife," but it was still entertaining.

I read it in about 12 hours (mostly my whole day Sunday) - it's about 400+ pages I think. What can I say, I'm a nerd.
